How to Build Your Dream Birth Team
Labor is one of the most life-changing moments you’ll ever experience, and having the right people by your side can make all the difference. Your birth team isn’t just about medical care—it’s about surrounding yourself with people who believe in you, respect your wishes, and make you feel safe and supported.
So, who should be on your birth team, and how can you make sure they align with your vision for a natural birth? Let’s break it down.
1. Your Partner or Primary Support Person
Your partner is often your most trusted advocate and source of emotional support. But let’s be honest—most partners aren’t born knowing how to help during labor!
That’s why preparation is key. Equip them with tools to:
Help you stay calm and relaxed during contractions
Remind you to breathe deeply and focus
Speak up for your birth preferences if you need them to

2. Your Provider: Midwife or OB
Your care provider’s approach to birth can shape your entire experience. If you’re planning for a natural birth, it’s essential to choose someone who aligns with your goals.
When interviewing providers, ask questions like:
How often do you see natural, unmedicated births?
What is your approach to minimizing interventions?
How do you support moms during labor?
Not sure what to ask? My guide includes a list of provider interview questions to help you feel confident in choosing the right fit.
3. A Chiropractor
A chiropractor with prenatal experience can help you prepare your body for labor by ensuring proper alignment. When your pelvis and spine are in optimal position, it:
Encourages your baby to settle into a good position for birth
Helps reduce discomfort during pregnancy and labor
May even shorten labor time by improving alignment
Look for a chiropractor certified in the Webster Technique, which is specifically designed to support pregnant women. Regular visits throughout pregnancy can help you feel more comfortable and confident as you approach your due date.
4. A Doula
A doula can be your secret weapon for a smoother, more supported birth. Think of them as a mix between a birth coach and your biggest cheerleader.
Here’s why doulas are so helpful:
They provide hands-on comfort measures like counterpressure or massage.
They remind you to stay focused and calm when labor feels intense.
They’re familiar with hospital or birth center procedures and can help you navigate decisions.
Research shows that having a doula can lower the chances of interventions and increase your satisfaction with your birth experience. If hiring a doula isn’t an option, consider bringing a trusted friend or family member who understands your birth goals.
5. A Pelvic Floor Specialist
Your pelvic floor is a critical part of the birth process, but many moms don’t realize how much tension in these muscles can impact labor. A pelvic floor specialist can teach you how to:
Relax your muscles during contractions
Push effectively while protecting your body
Recover postpartum with less discomfort
(Pro tip: If you’re in Cherokee County or Pickens County, I know several amazing pelvic floor PTs to help you prepare! Ask me for details!)
6. A Lactation Consultant
If you’re planning to breastfeed, connecting with a lactation consultant before birth can make a huge difference. They can help you:
Learn what to expect in the first days of breastfeeding
Practice techniques for latching and positioning
Troubleshoot common challenges like soreness or supply concerns
Many hospitals offer lactation support, but having an independent consultant you trust can give you peace of mind. They’ll be there to support you through your breastfeeding journey, even after you leave the hospital. Again, I have some amazing local lactation consultants I can point you to if you’re in North Georgia!
Your dream birth team isn’t about numbers—it’s about choosing people who will honor your wishes, build your confidence, and stand with you through the highs and lows of labor.
